Vera Twomey calls for funding of Bedrocan under Medical Cannabis Access Programme
The State’s funding of medicinal cannabis products must include a drug used by a large number of Irish patients, according to a leading campaigner.
Last month, funding was announced for the Medical Cannabis Access Programme, but it only covers certain products and those with specific conditions.
Bedrocan – a Dutch product used by roughly 50 patients under a special licence – is excluded.
Vera Twomey, who’s daughter Ava’s among those with access to the drug, says the cost of prescriptions is considerable.
“We’re just looking for fair and equal access to funding.
“The financial burden of having to pay up front is very significant, it’s over €9,500, so it’s considerable, and if it could be avoided we’d be very, very relieved.”
