SPECIAL REPORT: Raising Awareness About Stillbirth, Two Cork Mothers Speak Out
Between 30 and 35 babies are still born every year in Cork University Maternity Hospital. Baby Isabelle from Cobh was diagnosed with a fatal condition in pregnancy and was stillborn almost four years ago. Her mother Collette O’Toole says there’s a secrecy around the subject and it’s very hurtful for mothers whose babies were stillborn and are not acknowledged because it’s a topic that just isn’t spoken about. Between 30 and 35 babies are still born every year in Cork University Maternity Hospital and management there say still birth is ten times more common than cot death but the topic doesn’t get enough attention and awareness is needed. Nine-Year-Old Keeva Born With Achondroplasia
Nine-year-old Keeva was born with Achondroplasia – a form of dwarfism which occurs in approximately one in every 26,000 births. Lisa recently started a blog ‘My Small Wonder’ as Keeva is preparing for limb lengthening surgery in January and she says although there has been criticism about undergoing this surgery, it’s about enabling Keeva, not changing her. Sexual Assault Treatment Unit Cork
Margo Noonan of the Sexual Assault Treatment Unit in Cork says they’ve already dealt with 120 cases this year so far. 18 of those cases have been in the past two weeks alone, but she says this is only the tip of the iceberg.
